A federal grand jury has decided to charge former Amazon software engineer Paige Thompson with wire fraud & computer fraud and abuse charges in the indictment announced Wednesday. She’s scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 5.
Thompson was arrested last month on charges that she hacked Capital One and 30 other companies. Sometime between March and July of this year, Thompson created a script that would allow her to identify misconfigured firewalls on Amazon client systems.
Once inside, according to the indictment, Thompson stole data and utilized the breached system‘s resource for crypto mining. The case also states she stole the data of over 100 million Capital One customers.
Thompson was arrested July 29th after bragging about her exploits in online channels she had created, as well as Github.
She faces up to 25 years in prison.
